When people ask this we say "gray"
I was one of seven kittens born
unexpectedly on the porch of the school
custodian and offered to students. The
Bates Family chose me because I was gray
and Allison, who was in fifth grade, gave me
the regal name of Duchess. I had to be fed
with a bottle because my mother’s milk
dried up before I got big enough to wean.
The original vet who saw me (not here)
said, “She’s so nutritionally deprived that
she’ll never get bigger than six or eight
pounds.” He would be surprised that I
topped out at 17 pounds!
All my brothers and sisters got to go outside
but my Dad, Bill, insisted I stay in. Now I
am the only one celebrating a 15th
birthday.
I’m called “the attack cat” because I guard
my family by biting guests and repair
people. But I’m also a good nurse. When
anyone is sick, even the dog Blackie, I
stretch out in bed beside them and stay until
they are well. Recently, I got sick myself
and was staying in bed. Then Dr. Presley
discovered I had a kidney problem and gave
me special food. Now I’m feeling good
again, nursing my family, scaring intruders—
and sleeping wherever I want.

P.S. It was Duchess’ dad who insisted we
propose her as Pet of the Month. We didn’t
want to take space to say that if she occasionally
dashes out before the door closes, he races out
in his socks, even in the snow, to grab her!
This from the man who used to say, “I hate
cats!’
