American Shorthair
While out for a walk on a bitterly cold
night in an industrial park in the
northeastern part of Pennsylvania
during the Thanksgiving holiday, we
surprised to be enthusiastically greeted
by a rather vocal cute black and white
kitten that came running out from
behind some warehouse buildings.
She was soon followed by a sister and
brother.
We had at first thought that perhaps they were outdoor cats, but Amber's sweet gestures and
rather desperate meows told us something we struggled to come to grips with - that they were
likely abandoned and not fairing too well being outside in the near zero degree weather. We
decided to bring them home to our parents' house and take them to an animal shelter the next
day.  That night, they had the run of the house and made the most of it.  They were extremely
affectionate with everyone in our family and seemed genuinely appreciative of their temporary
home.
Upon bringing them to the shelter the next day, however, we had serious misgivings about
leaving them behind. It was not a no-kill shelter and the staff members didn't seem to treat our
little new found friends with much warmth.  When they explained their policies for euthanizing
the animals after thirty days, we began to have a very sickening feeling.  So we decided to load
them into our cars, in some newly purchased travel carriers, and bring them back on the five
hour drive to Pittsburgh. We had the notion of  taking them to a North Shore Animal Shelter,
which we were very familiar with, having adopted all our pets from the facility over the years.
Suffice to say, Amber's affectionate ways along with those of her sister, Chloe, and brother,
Max, took a real toll on our heartstrings over a few days.  Thus we decided to make them a
part of our family.  The truth be told however, we believe that Amber and her brother and sister
chose to adopt us. And as we reflect on the holiday season and all our blessings, we are very
thankful they did.
The little family of kittens were very cute, but a bit dirty.  We quickly surmised that they were
very hungry, both for food and affection. After a quick drive to a local grocery store, we had
secured a plastic shelter, a warm blanket, and plenty of food for our new found friends.
Thinking that this would suffice, we turned around to leave, only to find that they were
following us and just about leaping into our arms. They seemed to be far less concerned with
food and far more interested in being picked up and petted.
